Easy Summer Craft: Turn Your Pet into a Coloring Book Page! ๐พ๐จ
Looking for a fun summer activity to celebrate the animals in your life? With just a pet photo, a pencil or charcoal, and a pen, you can create your own custom coloring-book-style pet portrait!
โ๏ธ And! Fun Fact: Doodling isn't just fun, it can be relaxing, too! Research shows that drawing, coloring, and creating patterns helps us slow down, de-stress, and enjoy the present moment. ๐
Materials
A printed photo of your pet
Drawing paper
#2 Pencil or charcoal
Tape
Pen or fine liner
Step 1: Print and Cut Out Your Pet
Choose a clear photo of your pet and print it at your desired size. Cut around the outline.
Step 2: Cover the Back
Flip the photo over and cover the back with soft charcoal or a dark layer of #2 pencil (pressing very firmly). Charcoal works best because it transfers more easily.
Step 3: Tape It Down
Place the photo charcoal-side down on your drawing paper and secure it with a piece of tape. Use tape that will be easy to peel off, such as painterโs tape or washi tape.
If youโre using Scotch tape or another stickier tape, press it against your shirt or fingertips a few times before using it. This picks up a little lint and makes it less likely to tear your paper when you remove it.
Step 4: Trace the Main Shapes
Using a pen, trace over the image while pressing firmly. Focus on:
Head and body shape
Eyes, nose, and mouth
Ears and legs
Distinct markings
A few fur lines for texture
Don't worry about tracing every hair!
Step 5: Reveal Your Transfer
Carefully remove the photo and admire your charcoal transfer!
Donโt worry about any smudging for now!
Step 6: Ink Your Drawing
Trace over the transferred lines with pen and add any details you'd like.
Once the pen dries, you can wipe away or erase any remaining charcoal smudges.
Step 7: Get Creative!
Now comes the fun part! Leave your portrait as simple line art, turn it into a coloring page, add patterns, paint it, or create your own unique style.
Every pet is different, and every portrait will be too! ๐
๐ Bonus Tip: Cute & Easy Eyes!
The eyes bring your pet to life! Before filling them in with black, leave one larger white highlight near the upper corner of each eye and two smaller highlights below it. These little reflections will make your pet instantly look more expressive!
