Life Lessons from the Residents of Only Sunshine Sanctuary 💗

At Only Sunshine Sanctuary, our animal friends teach us something new every day! Through their resilience, kindness, curiosity, creativity, and joy, they remind us of lessons that are easy to forget in our busy lives.

We've paired some of our favorite quotes about animals, nature, and compassion with stories from the residents who inspire us. We hope they bring you a smile, a moment of reflection, and perhaps a little encouragement today!

Barney

“I never look at the masses as my responsibility. I look at the individual.” — Mother Teresa

Barney is just one of hundreds of rabbits dumped in Sacramento. He was rescued on Easter and now spends his days zooming around, munching on fresh hay, and starring in his foster mom’s Instagram reels—he’s quite the celebrity! Barney reminds us that helping even one animal can make a world of difference, and that each of us has the power to change lives.

Charlie

“Nothing in nature is unbeautiful.” — Alfred Lord Tennyson

When Charlie was rescued, he was injured, frightened, and struggling to survive after being abandoned. Yet beneath his hardship was the same beauty and worth he has always possessed. Today, Charlie reminds us that every animal deserves compassion, regardless of their species, circumstances… or level of sass!

Neapolitan

“Love only grows by sharing. You can only have more for yourself by giving it away to others.” — Brian Tracy

Every day, we see volunteers, donors, and community members share their time, resources, and compassion with animals like Neapolitan, who needs daily sunscreen to protect his back after suffering severe burns. As we practice kindness and generosity, we find we have more to give—and receive— than we ever imagined. 🤍

Void Kitty

“I have lived with several Zen masters—all of them cats.” — Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

Anyone who has shared a home with a cat knows how skilled they are at living fully in the present moment—even after hardships no one should have to endure. Like Void Kitty, who, even after a severe injury, just wanted a warm bed and a kind head scratch, animals often remind us to slow down, leave the past behind, and appreciate life’s simple joys.

Freckles

“Animals are sentient, intelligent, perceptive, funny and entertaining. We owe them a duty of care as we do to children.” — Michael Morpurgo

The rescued ducks at the sanctuary make us laugh every day when they treat the hose refilling their pools like their own personal shower. We love helping the ducks find their joy, like Freckles, a disabled duck who has limited mobility on land but transforms into an aquatic Olympian the moment she reaches the water. Animals like her remind us that every individual has unique abilities, preferences, and joys, and all are deserving of love and care. 💗

Barbara

“It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.” — Joaquin Phoenix

Barbara had to have her leg amputated after her previous owners left her in a state of severe neglect, but she doesn’t let that stop her! Today, she lives for hugs and mulberry treats, reminding us that kindness toward animals can be simple, free, and life-changing!

Ziggy

“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” — John Burroughs

Ziggy loves to sunbathe on the roof of her house (or in any available wheelbarrows) while surveying her kingdom and admiring the beautiful sky, marshmallow clouds, and vibrant mulberry trees. In a world that often feels busy and overwhelming, she reminds us of the peace, joy, and perspective that can come from spending even a few quiet moments with Mother Nature.

Dusty

“Regard yourself as a cloud, in the flesh, because you see, clouds never make mistakes. Did you ever see a cloud that was misshapen? Did you ever see a badly designed wave? No, they always do the right thing. But, if you will, treat yourself for a while as a cloud or a wave and realize that you can’t make a mistake whatever you do. Because even if you do something that appears totally disastrous, it will all come out in the wash somehow or another. Then through this capacity you will develop a kind of confidence. And through confidence you will be able to trust your own intuition.” — Alan Watts

Dusty is absolutely convinced he’s never made a mistake in his life.😅 His fearless, go-getter attitude reminds us that sometimes, we just have to take a leap. Even if we knock over a table or two along the way, things usually work out in the end!

Harold

The bee, attracted by the scent of the flower, lands on one then another, inadvertently enabling reproduction. Should the bee go extinct, not just flowers but birds, small mammals, and humans would likely also cease to exist. It's fair to assume that the bee doesn't know its role in this interconnected puzzle and in preserving the balance of nature. The bee is simply being.

…Rarely if ever do we know the grand intention, yet if we surrender to the creative impulse, our singular piece of the puzzle takes its proper shape.” — Rick Rubin, The Creative Act

Harold is a master of surrendering to his creative impulses! As the original artist behind much of the sanctuary's mud artwork, he spends his days perfecting his craft through a highly specialized (and delightfully messy) rooting process. Harold reminds us that creativity isn't about perfection, it's about following our curiosity, having fun, and sharing our unique gifts with the world!

The Whole Family 💗

“Only if we understand... can we care. Only if we care… will we help them. Only if we help... shall they be saved.” Jane Goodall

Every resident at Only Sunshine Sanctuary has taught us something about resilience, joy, kindness, creativity, courage, or love. When we take the time to understand animals as individuals, compassion naturally follows. And when compassion leads us to act, lives are changed, for animals and humans alike!

Feeling inspired? Help us continue providing lifelong care, safety, and love to animals like Charlie, Barbara, Barney, Freckles, Harold, Ziggy, Dusty, Void Kitty, and Neapolitan by donating, volunteering, or sharing their stories! 💗
