Our five hatchery roosters are named after the colors of the rainbow because each one is a unique individual with his own vibrant personality, preferences, thoughts, and feelings. This is their story.
We believe their story began at a hatchery. Across the egg industry, every day, newborn male chicks are culled by being ground up alive or suffocated in gas chambers or garbage bagsยน,ยฒ. The reason? Male chicksโ lives are considered worthless because they donโt lay eggs and bring in profit.
One day, by a miraculous twist of fate, five baby roosters were found on the side of the road near a Dixon hatchery. We arenโt sure how they escaped, but we are glad they did. A friend found them and brought them to us, and we welcomed them to safety. Small, innocent, and vulnerable away from the mothers they would never meet, they were completely dependent on us to protect them.
Because of that, they were likely spared a horrific fate that no animal should have to endure.
Instead, they were given a life of freedom, safety, and companionshipโa basic kindness that most male chicks never experience.
Today, they spend their days crowing at sunrise, dust-bathing in the sunshine, searching for bugs, enjoying tasty treats, and perching together on tree branches, free to simply be who they are. Pink, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Blue each have their own personalities that have blossomed in sanctuary: some are bold and curious, while others are gentle, cautious, or happiest perched beside their best friends.
Every chicken deserves the chance our Rainbow Roos received.
