The Only Sunshine Sanctuary herd needs your help!
Our sweet baby goats Ziggy and Bowie were rescued from a dairy farm after their mom passed away due to improper medical treatment from the farmer. We've been bottle feeding them ever since. They are so sweet and lovable, jumping up on people’s laps during movie night and following us around while we do farm chores.
Last week, Ziggy collapsed. She was rushed to UC Davis where we learned she had almost no red blood cells and needed an emergency blood transfusion. She was diagnosed with hemotropic mycoplasma. Thankfully, the transfusion was successful! She’s home after almost a week-long hospital stay and we’re treating her with antibiotics.
The bad news – this mycoplasma is contagious to other goats and sheep. Tuesday, we rounded up eight volunteers to load our herd into the trailer to take to UC Davis for blood tests. We loaded Shemp, Curly, Dominic, Barbara, Meadow, Bowie, and Dusty into our trailer (and our van) for a trip to UCD, which they were all pretty grumpy about!
Dusty had also recently started limping, so we had him x-rayed while we were there. Turns out, he stepped on a small roofing staple! We are grateful we caught it early, they were able to remove it, and he's recovering with antibiotics too.
We’re still awaiting results from the herd, but this whole stressful ordeal has cost us $4,000 in emergency vet bills.
